CDP, NYU create toolkit for better risk communication

Effective communication plays a vital role in the journey towards strengthening communities against disaster. After the devastating impact of Super Typhoon Haiyan on coastal communities, it was clear that a more efficient and organised tool for disseminating information is necessary.

With this goal in mind, the New York University has engaged with Center for Disaster Preparedness (CDP) and University of the Philippines Tacloban to implement a project entitled Storm Surge Risk Communication which started in 2016.

The engagement aims to create a resource that can be used by relevant agencies and groups for improving how people access and interpret technical hazard forecast information and enabling the translation of this into risk preventive actions.

The project, piloted in the Philippines and Bangladesh, is currently on its second phase. With the aim to improve and further develop the toolkit, the project team conducted several workshops, targeting participants from selected municipalities, schools, villages, and provinces of Leyte and Eastern Samar.

Discover a more effective way of disseminating hazard warnings by downloading the toolkit attached to this post. Better yet, click this link and visit the website to check out more information on the workshops and download the toolkit from there.

The toolkit and guide can be accessed by Toolkit tab, and workshop and lesson module material can be found through the Learning tab. In addition, please email the system manager, lejano@nyu.edu, to be included in the Community tab, where your logo, facebook page, and website address will be featured.
