I’m so tired of traditional ads. I use ad-blockers for everything, and I skip commercials the second the button appears. But lately, it feels like the 'ads' are just becoming part of the content itself. I see influencers talking about products so naturally that I don't even realize I’m being sold something until the video is over. Is this the end of the traditional commercial? How are brands going to survive if everyone is as cynical as I am? It feels like we are in an arms race between our desire for privacy and their need for eyes.
That sounds like a scene out of a sci-fi movie, but we’re basically halfway there already. Think about 'product placement' in video games or how brands sponsor entire virtual events. If they can make the brand feel like a necessary part of the fun, then the consumer's guard drops completely. It’s a much more effective way to capture attention because it doesn't feel like a transaction. We are moving away from 'look at this' to 'live in this,' which is a much more powerful way to control how a population thinks and spends their limited daily attention.
